9 HOLE CHALLENGE - Jefferson Professional Tools & Equipment

Castlegregory launch 9-Hole Challenge

CASTLEGREGORY Golf Club, with the significant support of Jefferson Tools, are running a novel NineHole counting golf competition over a five-week period from the end of June and through the month of July.

The GUI have stated “The aim of nine-hole golf is to offer the opportunity for club members to play competitive golf in less time – allowing members, who are short of time, to stay involved in the club and maintain their handicap” so the Castlegreory club have now decided to act upon this and hence the new event.

The competition will run on five consecutive Wednesdays from June 27 to July 25 and there are prizes each week as well as overall challenge prizes, which will be awarded to the players with highest cumulative score from their best three weeks of scores. It is an open mixed competition and players can play just once or in all five weekly events, but to compete for challenge prizes a minimum of three weeks entry is required.

The tee is open all day every Wednesday, but booking is advisable from 066-7139444 and there will be a first and second prize as well as a best gross and best lady prize each week.

The challenge prizes for the best three cards from the five weeks will be awarded for the overall winner, best gross, best lady and best score in categories 2,3&4.

This is a superb opportunity for the golfers of Kerry and beyond who may be holidaying in the area to get in a competitive round that is a counting competition for handicap while enjoying arguably Ireland’s greatest nine-hole links.

Ivan Morris' Ireland's Best 9-Hole Golf Courses Book On Sale Here for €15

Hugely acclaimed golf writer, Ivan Morris in his recent publication “Ireland’s Best 9-Hole Golf Courses” rates Castlegregory as one of the top three 9-Hole Links Courses in the country.  “Castlegregory Golf Links comfortable fills the bill that Desmond Muirhead, the creator of some of some of the world’s most famous courses and a former associate in Jack Nicklaus Golf Design Empire, had in mind when he stated: “I look upon a golf hole as a theatre with the golfer as the actor.  The course is a number of theatres making one large coliseum.  So the golf course architect is creating a series of theatres, a string of haunted glades where magic lives and where drama is suddenly set free.”  From the get-go, there is no shortage of drama, ecstasy and angst at Castlegregory.  The way apportioned is up to yourself.”

Ivan comments, “The springy turf, ever-present wind, slanting, well-maintained greens and unique surrounding scenery make Castlegregory one of Ireland’s best, links tests.”  He further adds that “You could transfer Castlegregory’s wonderful 8th hole (365-metres), which is played back into the prevailing South-westerly to any course on The Open rota and nobody would complain (or notice.)” “The drive through Conor Pass and down into Dingle is one of the most enjoyable in County Kerry.  Just sixteen miles beyond Tralee, an absolute gem of a links at Castlegregory is without doubt amount the top-3, let alone top-10, 9-holes layouts in Ireland.”  In remarking about the magnificent setting and scenery he also refers to the CNSO – Castlegregory Natterjack Symphony Orchestra “performing an unnerving, late evening, throaty “Ribbit, ribbit, ribbit!” concert at the 9th (149-metres) – a medium length, par-3 over a small pond, to an exclusive target set at an angle in an amphitheatre of dunes.”

The elusive Natterjack has found a welcoming home in the ponds of the Castlegregory Course and thrives in a wonderful environment.

Ivan also extolls the welcome that awaits one by nominating that Club as having “The most engaging membership”.

Castlegregory is certainly not to be missed and very well worthwhile putting on any golfer’s itinerary.
