EXCHANGE CEANN SIBÉAL - 2 PERSON CLASSIC

A dramatic East V. West showdown for the Maurice Fitzgerald Trophy took place in brilliant sunshine on Sunday 18^th April. A large number of Easterlies and Westies assembled for a shotgun start at 8.30 a.m. After lots of coffee and a slow start, the battle began in earnest after about four holes and then raged for the next three hours as fortunes swayed from side to side. Early reports indicated that the East were ahead by a mile, but this later turned out to be one of a number of false rumours during the day.  Many thoughts were on ’40 points’, but in the end only one competitor managed to break the magic 40. The evergreen Derry O’Mahony hit an excellent 41 points to give the East a major boost as the count began in the clubhouse. However, despite a couple of solid 36s, the East could not hold the lead, as the Sean Lyons captained West brought in a consistent series of cards in the mid to high 30s. Eventually, the inspirational East Captain, Sean O’Connor Tralee, had to reluctantly concede victory. After the count, the prize presentation was held in Maurice Fitzgerald’s pub in Castlegregory. In an excellent speech, Club Captain Joe Mulcahy expressed his thanks to Maurice for his sponsorship and the lovely food and hospitality. A brilliant golfing day and competition – well done to all involved.
