Victory in Munster Country Clubs

Castlegregory scored a brilliant and hard fought victory over Castlerosse in the Munster Country Clubs today at Ross Golf Club. This was a Munster rugby like performance by the men in light blue as from early on the day seemed to be going Castlerosse's way. A great fight back on the back 9 saw the tables turn slightly, but two matches of the seven had to go to extra holes. Castlegregory won both to just get the better of a very much improved Castlerosse team. With a number of the panel hampered by volcanic ash, all members of the team who played on the day gave everything for the cause. To the brave and faithful nothing is impossible, after a few pints...with apologies to Munster who also seem to have to play all their important matches away. Very well done to team members Tom Moriarty (who works in Tipperary), Brian Neenan (who insults Tipperary), Eddie Hanafin (who turns out for every club team every year), Pat Leahy (who can find you the golf club you need from anywhere in the world), George Nash (who comes from Tipperary), Johnny Conway (who is nearly as good a golfer as he was a soccer player) and Captain Joe Mulcahy (who takes phone calls with his right hand to sort out club problems while holing putts with his left hand). Well done also and thanks to team mentors Mike Tangney, Mike Burrows and Pat Doody.

East V. West on Sunday 18th April

A dramatic East V. West showdown for the Maurice Fitzgerald Trophy took place in brilliant sunshine on Sunday 18th April. A large number of Easterlies and Westies assembled for a shotgun start at 8.30 a.m. After lots of coffee and a slow start, the battle began in earnest after about four holes and then raged for the next three hours as fortunes swayed from side to side. Early reports indicated that the East were ahead by a mile, but this later turned out to be one of a number of false rumours during the day.  Many thoughts were on ’40 points’, but in the end only one competitor managed to break the magic 40. The evergreen Derry O’Mahony hit an excellent 41 points to give the East a major boost as the count began in the clubhouse. However, despite a couple of solid 36s, the East could not hold the lead, as the Sean Lyons captained West brought in a consistent series of cards in the mid to high 30s. Eventually, the inspirational East Captain, Sean O’Connor Tralee, had to reluctantly concede victory. After the count, the prize presentation was held in Maurice Fitzgerald’s pub in Castlegregory. In an excellent speech, Club Captain Joe Mulcahy expressed his thanks to Maurice for his sponsorship and the lovely food and hospitality. A brilliant golfing day and competition – well done to all involved.
