News from the Ladies Club - by Captain Sandra
All roads led to Kilrush yesterday for the eagerly awaited Intermediate and Minor 2nd round clashes of the AA Leagues. The weather was kind to us and the skies cleared to give us a dry enough day but with very difficult conditions underfoot. The sight of so many blue jumpers in the shape of caddies and support was a very welcome start to the day’s endeavours. Text messages of support were clogging the airwaves and we were ready for the off.
The Intermediate team (aided by four male and one female caddy) played their hearts out but were unable to overcome a strong and very determined Ardfert contingent- much to the disgust of the fiercely competitive Liz O’Carroll who had to be wrestled from the 16th tee-box, one up with three to play! It was, however, a very sporting match and we wish our neighbours the very best for their next match.
All attention now converged on the Minors and a surge of blue could be witnessed heading for 11th. Tina Moriarty, aided by her sister Ann, strode past, clearly avoiding eye-contact, but body language conveyed at least one up. Helen Besseling was next and quickly informed us that she hated the conditions, had been three up, was now all square but we worried not! Mary Sills passed by quietly accompanied by Marion Burke and we got the nod – two up.
Ger O’Brien was next, supported by the ever-calm Pat, who indicated one up and in control. Kilkee supporters next to us informed us that in the last match our Marilyn Spillane would be really up against it with their most in-form player and this proved to be the case. We gave a few rallying shouts in Marilyn and Mary’s direction and moved to the 17th tee-box.
Tina (who for the first time in her life admitted to nerves yesterday!) played a great tee-shot on the 17th and headed down the 18th one up. Mary Sills arrived having won her match on the 15th closely followed by Marilyn who had lost. Word came back that Tina had won the 18th so 2-1 to Castlegregory. It was now down to Helen and Ger. Helen, still muttering about the conditions, hit a very good drive on the 17th, halved the hole and moved on the 18th – all flat. Ger (and a very pale Pat) hit a superb drive to the par three 17th, halved the hole and also headed for the 18th _ all flat. The blue surge now moved en masse to the 18th green where we discovered that Helen and Ron were on the 19th tee. We all held our breath as Ger, belying her relative inexperience, sank the putt to halve the 18th and follow Helen down the 19th. At this point, with our nerves in shreds, we heard the cheer from the clubhouse indicating Shane Lowry’s win and we took this as a good omen for us. We followed Ger down the 19th where she showed gritty determination in holing out once again, oblivious to the gallery, this time to win the match for a fantastic minor team. Mike Keane’s whistle to recall Helen as she drove off on the 20th could be heard, I am reliably informed, in Tomasins!
I was, as Lady Captain, really proud of both teams yesterday. It was a great day to be wearing the blue jumper and everyone who was there felt this as well. Thanks to all and continued success to the Juniors who will now face either Limerick or Shannon in Ballybunion on June 13th.

Great Performance by Munster Country Clubs Team
Our Mens Country Clubs team followed up their win over Ballyheighue in the first round with a comprehensive victory over Castlerosse in the second round at Ross Golf Club on Sunday morning 3rd May. On Sunday afternoon they were on the tee again at Ross at 3 p.m. to face up to Ardfert in the quarter final. As usual against Ardfert over the last few years, this match turned into a thriller. Three matches all in the best of seven singles, with the deciding match all square after eighteen....down the 19th to decide who makes it through to the semi-final....it couldn’t get any closer than that. Unfortunately, Ardfert had a great par on the 19th to claim victory. A great performance by all panel members and team managers. Very well done to all.
