Lady Captain Sandra Writes

What a great weekend of golf for the ladies club in Castlegregory!  The Intermediate team took on the formidable Ballyheigue Castle in sun-drenched Tralee on Saturday afternoon.  I lead off, full of determination and a wish to lead by example, but was soon put in my place by a very able Ann Leahy whose short game one just had to admire on the day.  My dejection, however, was immediately lifted by the sight of the calmly confident Marie McCarthy striding up the 14th and much relief followed when we saw the couple shake hands on the green. Marie is an excellent match player and in her own quiet manner always does the business for our club. We began to relax a little when we observed the body language of Merlyn O Connor who was obviously well ahead.  We will say nothing about the fact that when asked how she was doing at this point she replied that she was six up! On the 14th?  The match had unbeknownst to the pairing finished on the 13th! 2 – 1 to Castlegregory – we just needed one more. Liz O’Carroll strode past us on the 16th  - all square. Kathleen Hennessey (on about 150 anti-biotics for an infection) followed, trying not to make eye-contact, but we did elicit that she was one up. We watched the 17th green in silent anticipation and were quietly euphoric when the inevitable handshake happened. We then, rather cruelly, let Liz play up the 18th before calling her in before she could win the hole and play down the 19th.  A great day’s work, without caddies, for the girls and heartiest congratulations to all. We next play East Clare in Kilrush on the weekend of May 17th/18th.

Helen Besseling’s Minor Team was grappling with Lahinch on the Castleisland course at the same time on Saturday afternoon.  Word very quickly came through that they, too, had been successful. Helen was the first in with a resounding victory on the 14th.  She, (very modestly) admitted that her approach shot on the 14th would equal any on the European Tour! That is of course, what we expect from the Castlegregory ladies. Tina Moriarty (always an able competitor) won well on the 17th.  Two in the bag and the confidence was growing.  All focus now descended on Mary Sills who did us proud by winning well on the 16th.  Marilyn Spillane and Ger O’Brien were then deprived of the pleasure and called in.  Castlegregory ladies, Helen tells me, were the more fit on the day and more able for the formidable Castleisland course where even two of the caddy cars gave up on the 14th!  Very well done to the ladies and to their caddies (husbands and partners were even called in) and we look forward to the second round, also in Kilrush, on the weekend of 17th May.

Sunday saw the Challenge Cup Ladies out in force in Ceann Sibeal against worthy opponents Tralee. We had decided that three in a row would be quite nice. It was not to be however, but this was certainly not due to lack of effort on the Castlegregory ladies behalf. Colette Burghoff played a stormer and brought in a win for the team. Marian Burke, Anne Woods and Miriam Mulhall Nolan lost out to a spirited display of golf from the Tralee team, with Nora Keoghan called in. The team played very well and their performance can be seen as great practice for the Noreen Moore in June. Well done to all players and caddies.

News from the Ladies Club

Castlegregory ladies had a busy Easter weekend with a great turnout both for the two competitions and the prize-giving on Easter Sunday.  Nora Keogan was the worthy winner of the Lombard Ireland sponsored Easter weekend competition with a creditable 33 points from Teresa Rice and Mary T Real in second and third place.  On Easter Monday  Kathleen Hennessey brought in an excellent 36 points in a competition sponsored by Daragh and Susan Coakley of Mallow. Kay Meade and Geraldine O’Brien took up 2nd and 3rd places on this occasion.

The weekend also saw the culmination of the IMS Mortgage Solutions sponsored Easter Hamper competition which was run as a 9-hole re-entry over the last 6 weeks.  Dan O’Connor took time out to present the ever popular Merlyn O’Connor with the main hamper with a surprised Helen Besseling taking second and an even more surprised Marie McCarthy coming a very close third.  The results were as follows:

1st Merlyn O’Connor (21)  58 pts

2nd Helen Besseling (26) 53 pts

3rd Marie McCarthy (20) 52 pts.

The Ladies’Club would like to thank really sincerely Dan & Con O’Connor for their very generous sponsorship of this competition. It was very much appreciated – especially this year!

Thanks also to all members for their support in the Ladies’ Club raffle of an Easter Hamper.  The very worthy winner, and a great supporter of the ladies club, was Donagh Shanahan.

All the very best to our teams who are out in force this weekend.  As all our teams are performing we are very, very short of caddies so if any kind member, male or female, has a few spare hours over the weekend they will be welcomed with open arms! The Intermediate Ladies play in Tralee at 12.00pm Saturday, the Minor in Castleisland at 12 and the Challenge in Ceann Sibeal on Sunday at 3.00pm.  If available please contact Merlyn 0879745604,  Helen 0876980119 and Marie 0863936617 respectively.
