Lady Captain Sandra Nyhan and Captain Sean Barry accompanied by Lady President Joan Ferriter and President Ger Callanan, welcomed a huge crowd of members, family and friends to their drive-in on Sunday last.

Special Guest of Honour was Mrs Peggy Griffin, inaugural Lady President and to whom we all owe a huge debt of gratitude, because without her generosity, we would not have a golf club and course.

ILGU Southern District PRO, Gorretti O’Connor, in the company of Jim, the Sheriff of Newcastlewest, was seen chatting to the rep from the Four Courts, Mary Rose, while the educationalists amongst us took a well earned break from the stresses and strains of the classroom – Pat Doody, Marion Burke, Edel Randles, Tom Moriarty, Sean Spillane and Noel Earlie were all discussing the curriculum while munching on the smoked salmon and sipping a very fine chardonnay.

In the accountants’ corner, Pat Prendeville was hearing confessions while Sean O’Connor was giving absolution !.. interesting to note the steady stream of clients “nonchalantly” stopping at that table !! Nearby, Jim O’Sullivan was ‘assuring’ people that all would be ok while former Lady Captain Merlyn was telling us about cholesterol testing under the VHI, as we munched on her fresh cream pavlova !! The Vintners Assoc was well represented by former Club President Mattie and Michéal O’Dowd, both of whom were trying to get Mike Spillane back into the game and give up his worldwide touring.

Sport was a major topic on the day, would Ireland beat Italy (yes), would Tyrone beat Kerry again (yes,later on  No ),  would Cork ever again have a hurling team, will Sean Barry introduce drug testing in Castlegregory, is Sandra Nyhan any relation to Thady Quill............

For the drive-in, Sandra used a Ping G5 and sent the ball towards the lake, Sean had a G5 as well and the ball hasn’t landed yet ! This was followed by a 9-hole 4 person classic – Derry O’Mahony was captain of the winning team.

A great day to start their year and we wish both Captains & both Presidents a very enjoyable and successful year ahead.

A huge crowd turned out on Sunday 15^th February to support Captains Sean and Sandra at their Drive-in. Many former Captains and Presidents were present including our first Lady President, Peggy Griffin, on whose lands our first golf holes were built. Our car park overflowed and cars were parked all the way out to the main road! The refreshments and drinks also flowed strongly and the Captains hit massive drives to well and truly mark the official start of their year in office. After the Drive-In, a very large number participated in a 4 person 9-hole classic. Keep an eye on the website over the next few days for other items and photos from the Drive-In.
