After a fairly long build-up and plenty of winter training, underdogs Edel Randles & Mike Keane overcame hot favourites Lori Fitzgerald & Ken Ryan in the final of the Club Mixed Foursomes in windy conditions on Saturday last. Despite the best efforts of Lori with the occasional bit of help from Ken, the winners were never led and turned with a commanding lead. The match finished with the first halved hole of the day on the 13th green.

Shot of the day belonged to Edel, when she chipped in from the rough behind the 6th green for a birdie. Congratulations to both pairings on a fine sporting match. What are the odds on Edel and Mike doing the double in 2008?

With the top 18 and ties qualifying for the Spring League Final, a total of 21 players have made it through to the final shoot out. The final will take place this Sunday 24^th February. Qualifiers play in the regular Sunday morning Singles Stableford with the top card from the qualifiers emerging as Spring League Champion. The smooth talking Joe McKenna led the qualifiers with 110 points but, with everyone back to scratch again for the final, anyone of the 21 could take the Champion’s Medal.  The overall Spring League is sponsored by John Carroll, C&C Cleaners, Tralee.

Scoring is hotting up in the Spring League with a number of top 18 places still up for grabs when the final qualifying round takes place this Sunday 17^th February. After round three, 2007 Golfer of the Year and last year’s Spring League leading qualifier Pat Leahy shares the lead with the quick-fire match play king, Michael Burrows. These are closely followed by a group of seven big names, all with 100 pts or better. While these nine appear safe, anyone below 100 will need a big performance on Sunday to be sure of getting into the top 18 for the final playoff.  The top 36 after round three are shown in the table below.

The 3^rd Round of the Mens Spring League takes place this Sunday 10^th February, with an 18 hole Singles Stableford competition sponsored by McMahons Timber. It’s a shotgun start with a draw for playing partners at 8.15 a.m. and tee off at 8.30 a.m.
