Mike Mercer Wins Golfer of the Year Masters
Fresh from his victory in the DNG Giles sponsored singles stableford on Sunday, Mike Mercer was up early again on Bank Holiday Monday to get the better of 17 other top golfers in the Golfer of the Year Masters. This competition, kindly sponsored by Pat Prendeville, is for the 18 leading players in the Golfer of the Year table after the final qualifying competition. After an exceptional 37 points on Sunday in strong winds and sometimes driving rain, Mike went one better with a brilliant 38 in more difficult conditions on the Monday. This was a very rare double on consecutive days and rumour has it that Mike is keen on doing the three in a row next Sunday. Mike is a great club man and supporter of Castlegregory and well deserves his success. To prove that there is no equal to experience when the pressure is on, Mike was followed home in second place in both competitions by Fergus Moroney, who shot an excellent 37 points on Monday. Congratulations and well done to both.
Golfer of the Year Masters Results
1. Mike Mercer (19) - 38 pts.
2. Fergus Mononey (12) – 37.
3. Colin O’Sullivan (17) - 35.
Fr 9. Pat Leahy.
Back 9. Sean Lyons.
Pat Leahy Takes Golfer of the Year 2007
Long time leader Pat Leahy finally clinched the 2007 Golfer of the Year title in the last qualifying competition on Sunday 28th October. Pat had been in the lead for most of the year, but he had to beat off strong challenges from Joe Mulcahy, Mike Burrows and Pat Prendeville, over the last couple of weeks. Pat is a very deserving winner and we congratulate him on his achievement.

Men's Golfer of the Year Title Still Up for Grabs
The race for Men’s Club Golfer of the Year will go down to the wire with three still in contention approaching the final qualifying competition on this Sunday 28th October. Long time leader Pat Leahy is ahead on 136 points after last Sunday. But both Michael Burrows and Pat Prendeville moved within striking distance with top two finishes on Sunday. Michael is in second on 127 points, with Pat third on 118. With 20 points for first, 15 for second, 10 for third and 7 down to 1 for 4th to 10th places – any one of the three could win the title on Sunday.
In addition to the Golfer of the Year title, the top 18 players in the table will qualify for the GOY Masters competition on the Bank Holiday Monday 29th October. The GOY Masters is run over 18 holes stableford and tee off time is 9.30 a.m. The Masters is kindly sponsored by Pat Prendeville and prizes will be presented in the Clubhouse immediately after play.

It was close at the top of the leader board in the ladies singles stableford over the weekend with only one point separating the first three. After the count, Kathleen Hennessy just pipped sponsor Gorretti O’Connor on the count-back, with Marie McCarthy third.
Fresh from their short three-month summer break, ITT men Pat Doody and Robert Sheehy dominated the Men’s final Monthly Medal of 2007, with Dr. Doody shooting a gross 70 to take the prize sponsored by Met Pro Group, Tralee. Precision approach play together with slide-rule putting enabled Pat to put in a strong challenge to his own course record. With all the playing angles covered, Pat was last seen in the clubhouse with calculator in hand trying to work out his new handicap. We believe you are now playing off 6... well done Pat.

Jerry O'Connor Memorial Cup Presentation
Jerry O'Connor Memorial Cup
The Jerry O’Connor Memorial Cup, open to Ladies and Men and played on a glorious warm final day of September, was won in spectacular fashion by the in-form Donal Donovan. Donal, part of the dynamic duo of Prendeville and Donovan, outshone his fourball partner on this occasion, coming home three clear points ahead of Pat. Was this a statement of intent for the Club Fourball final? However, not to be out-done by the dynamic duo, Eddie Hanafin shot an excellent 39 for third. Eddie and golfing partner Joe Mulcahy will form the opposition in the Fourball final. What a final it promises to be.....expect skin, hair and titleists to fly all over our beautiful golf course. The Ladies section was won by the also in-form Teresa Rice, who followed up her excellent 40 points in Friday’s competition with a very solid 37.
Thanks to all who played and a special thanks to all who attended the prize giving in Tomasins on Sunday night. We were privileged to have Eileen O’Connor present to present the cup which she donated in memory of her husband Jerry. Jerry was a golfing character and I know from talking to people that he is still missed by many.
