Sean Lyons takes President Joe McKenna's Prize

Club stalwart Sean Lyons won his first ever major when he took President Joe McKenna's prize with an excellent 41 points last weekend. Sean had set this as one of his golfing goals for this year and with the benefit of many hours in the gym and on the practice range, he had a relatively easy win with a full three points to spare over the experienced Mike Spillane and our top leftie Joe Mulcahy. Thanks to President Joe for an excellent weekend.

It was with great sadness that we learned on Sunday morning of the death of our fellow member, colleague and friend, Mary Munnelly. Our heart felt sympathies to Mary's family and her wide circle of friends.

Images from the Captain's Prize 2007

Another scoop for The Kingdom as Nicky Barry decides to play with the winner Ken. Donagh doesn't want to spoil the story and agrees to wait until next year. What price on Ken making it a 'major' double in the President's Prize in two weeks time?

"I wonder if I gave him a beer would he let me qualify?"

All the President's men.

Winners of the prize for the most yarns told over the 18 holes....."Did you hear the one about the two former Captains looking for a mortgage....."

Everyone plays in the Captain's Prize....Bookies, Basketball stars and All Blacks supporters

William O'Shea, Captain of Killorglin, paid us a visit despite being on crutches with a broken ankle.

Vice Captain and former Captain about to set out on their epic journey.."which way is Portugal"?

Lady Captain & Baby Captain

"Will we play for €2?"

"The long and the short of it is that there must be more than the two of us playing in this thing....but where are they?"

Castlegregory Captain's Prize Results

On Sunday 15th July Ken Ryan won his second Captain's Prize at Castlegregory when he took George Nash's prize with and excellent 98.5 net for the testing 27 hole stroke event. With the cut set at 72 net after 18 holes, 15 golfers qualified to compete in the final 9 holes at 6 p.m. on Sunday evening. Leading the pack on 66 were Mike Williams, Martin Lynch and Ken Ryan. However with five others within four shots of the lead, the final outcome was very much in the balance. After four holes the word filtered through that Ken was keeping up where he had left off after 18, with the swing smooth and measured and the putting stroke sweet and true. Ken covered the final 9 in two over par gross to win by two and a half clear shots from Frankie Herlihy. Frankie kept the pressure on Ken all the way and he was closely followed by the 'on-fire' Pat Leahy. With a gross score of 7 over par for the 27 holes played, Ken was a very worthy winner.

In addition to those mentioned above, the other qualifiers were:
Martin Rice, Pat Prendeville, Dan O'Connor, Colin O'Sullivan, Mike Keane, Mike Tangney, Sean O'Connor Adare, Kevin Lyons, Jerry Lawlor and Tom Ferriter.

Billy O'Sullivan Team Lose to Waterville

On Saturday last our Billy O'Sullivan squad went down to a very strong Waterville team in Round 1. Despite home advantage and the excellent preparation of team manager and Club President, Joe McKenna, we were always fighting a rearguard action after our first two pairings fell to some high quality golf. However, the final three matches were touch and go with only a one hole difference at any stage in all three matches. The overall match went Waterville's way when our third pairing lost out to a fine Waterville par on the 18th. Congratulations to a very sporting Waterville team led by Club Captain Michael Gill and Secretary of the Federation of Kerry Clubs, Eamonn English.

On behalf of the Club I would like to thank team manager Joe McKenna and all panel members for their time and dedication in representing the Club. I know that all were disappointed on the day, but it takes courage to put your name forward for team selection and you should all be proud of the way that you represented Castlegregory. Golf is a game of honour played by friendly rivals and this was well demonstrated by all participants on Saturday....Captain George

Results Week Ending 8th July 2007

Student Eoin O'Donnell warmed up for next week's Captain's Prize with an excellent 65 in the July Monthly Medal sponsored by Brian Neenan (Neecal Natural Stone Care). Brian himself warmed up for the Munster hurling final by shooting a tidy 72 on Saturday. However, his native Limerick couldn't follow his example in the final, with a slightly untidy finish against Waterford. Despite some bunker trouble on the fourth, Ken Ryan shot an impressive 67 to take second spot and installed himself as the punter's favourite for the Captain's Prize.

In the Ladies Scotch Foursomes, Teresa Rice and Lori Fitzgerald combined brilliantly to take ladies favourite Donagh Shanahan's prize by eight clear points.
