Country Clubs Team Pipped in Thriller

Munster Country Clubs team, back left to right: Pat Prendeville (Manager), Eddie Hanafin, John Rowan, Tim Scannell. Front: Tom Moriarty, Liam Ryan, George Nash, Jim Sullivan, Joe Mulcahy (Team Captain), Ger Callanan. Missing from photo: Frankie Herlihy.
It was a case of so close yet so far for our Country Clubs team in the Munster quarter final in Ballyheigue on Saturday last 23rd June, when we were pipped by Spanish Point, Co. Clare, by 4 matches to 3. This was a hard fought and highly competitive match, with Castlegregory on the back foot from early on in most of the 7 singles matches - the format for the Country Clubs is 7 singles matches off scratch for players with handicaps of not below 10. However from a point where all seemed lost, a great fight back on the back nines saw the scores level at 3 matches all. The deciding match went to the final holes before Spanish Point edged it with an excellent up and down from a greenside bunker. We congratulate Spanish Point on their victory and wish them well in the semi-final.
Captain's Note:
I know that our Country Clubs team does not like coming second and will hate the 'gallant loser' tag, as indicated by the manager in his fine pre-match team talk. However, on behalf of the Club, I would like to acknowledge the effort, dedication and competitiveness of all the panel members and management. This was shown in all preparation and training matches and in the excellent victories over Abbeyfeale and Ballyheigue in the opening rounds. This team represented our Club with spirit, honour and pride and we should all be rightly proud of them. Special thanks to Michael Burrows who managed in the early rounds and to Pat Prendeville who took over when Michael was away on holidays.....George.

Brave Effort by Mixed Foursomes Team

Our Irish Mixed Foursomes squad put up a gallant performance at the beautiful Mallow Golf Course on Saturday last before finally giving way to a very strong Killarney team. Managers Goretti O'Connor and Ger Callanan had the team well prepared for the challenge of the Mallow course...."don't forget the Blackwater"... This was an excellent fighting performance, typical of Castlegregory teams, and no honour was lost in defeat. Killarney had the edge on the day. Special thanks to the team managers and their assistants and to all panel members for their time, effort and commitment to the Club.

Castlegregory Reach 3rd Round of Jimmy Bruen

Our Men's team reached the 3rd round of the Jimmy Bruen Shield for the first time in the Club's history during a scorching weekend of intense golfing battle in Castleisland. In the first round on Saturday morning we had a thrilling victory over Abbeyfeale. After a quick sandwich an a cup of tea our men had to face the first tee again to do battle with Glengarrif from across the Cork border. As in the earlier match this turned into a mighty battle in the hot afternoon sun before victory was secured by the odd match in five.

Manager Mike Keane ordered his troops to an early bed as Newcastle West, one of the favourites, had to be faced at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning. Sunday was another scorcher and after a hearty breakfast at the very friendly Castleisland club house, our team faced the starter for the third time over the weekend. Another titanic struggle ensued against our West Limerick friends with all five matches close and highly competitive. In the end Newcastle West deserved their victory, but only just. This was an excellent performance by our team and great credit must go to the highly organised and very efficient manager Mike Keane, and to all panel members for their time, dedication and effort.

Jimmy Bruen Panel Members
John Rowan, Ken Ryan, Liam Ryan, Eddie Hanafin, Joe Mulcahy, Ger Callanan, Martin Rice, Tom Moriarty, Mike Tangney, Denis McCarthy, Pat Doody, Pat Prendeville, Frankie Herlihy, Seamus Brown, George Nash.

A message from the Club Captain:
On behalf of all club members I would like to thank Manager Mike and all panel members for their tremendous effort in the Jimmy Bruen over the weekend. Your demeanour, competitive spirit and sportsmanship did Castlegregory proud. You are a credit to the club and you have demonstrated that the Club can compete and win in all competitions that we enter. It's onwards now to the Irish Mixed Foursomes, in partnership with the Ladies Club, in Mallow next weekend versus Killarney in round 1. This will be followed by the quarter final of the Munster Country Clubs against Spanish Point in Ballyheigue on June 23rd, and the first round of the Billy O'Sullivan Shield versus Waterville in Castlegregory on July 7th. Best wishes to all teams in the coming weeks.......George.

Competition Results - Week Ending 3rd June 2007

Some excellent golf was played over the weekend in varied weather conditions. Sandra Nyhan hit an excellent 38 pts to win the beautiful pottery sponsored by Marjorie Cunningham of Blennerville Pottery. The ever present Kathleen Hennessy and former Ladies Hon Sec Marion Burke collected the runner up prizes.

The Men's Monthly Medal, kindly sponsored by Seamus O'Sullivan Butchers, was won by a massive nine strokes by Limerick left-hander Joe Mulcahy. Joe has been threatening to shoot the lights out for a long time, but on Saturday in difficult conditions, he shot the lights, sun, moon and stars to record a fantastic 60 net. The sweet putting Frankie Herlihy and the consistent Eddie Hanafin filled the runner-up spots with good scores of 69 and 70 respectively. On a normal 'non-Joe' day these would have been very good scores. Well done Joe and congratulations on your new handicap.
