Castlegregory Club Teams News - 27.05.2007.

Both Ladies and Mens Clubs fielded teams in inter-club competitions over the weekend. In the AA Junior Foursomes our ladies faced formidable opposition from Castletroy at Lahinch. Luck was not on our side in the third and deciding match, however our team can be very proud of their golfing performance and in the honourable way that they represented our club.
 
In the Mens Pierce Purcell Shield we faced Dooks in Killorglin on Saturday. This was a very close encounter with all five matches in the balance for a long way. All matches went to the final holes with victory in the end going to a slightly stronger Dooks side. Well done to all team members and mentors. It was wonderful to see the club colours worn with pride in Killorglin. Our club can be rightly proud of the integrity and sportsmanship displayed by all involved.

Results Week Ending 13th May

Marie McCarthy and Tom Moriarty hit top form to win their respective Captain's Prize to the 'other' club over a blustery weekend. Marie (40 pts) had a full seven points to spare over the very consistent Kathleen Hennessy while Tom equalled his age with his score of 41 to win by three from the improving Kevin Russell.

 

Note: The Men's Pierce Purcell team continue their preparation this week with a challenge match against Killorglin -  Thursday 17th May at 6 p.m. sharp in Killorglin.

Ladies AA Championships - Junior Foursomes

Our ladies had a great win over Kanturk in the AA Junior Foursomes at the weekend and are now through to the 3rd round. Sandra Nyhan & Tina Moriarty won on the 14th, Teresa Rice & Bridie Purcell also won on the 14th, while Gorretti O'Connor & Edel Randles were called in on the 17th where they were one up. In the 3rd round we play Castletroy at Lahinch on Saturday the 26th May. Best of luck to all on the day.

Castle Scotch Classic Results

The first Castle Scotch Classic competition was completed recently with victory going to the Kerry / Limerick combination of Lady Vice-Captain Merlyn O'Connor (20) and 2006 President's Prize winner Noel Earlie (21). This combination shot an impressive one over par 35 gross, giving a nett score of 24 off their handicap of 11. For this competition a pair's handicap is got by taking half the combined handicap and then halving that again as it's a 9 hole competition. Husband and wife combination Goretti (24) and Jim (18) O'Connor were runners up with 27 nett - this was on the count back with two other pairings also on 27.
 
The second Scotch Classic is currently on-going and runs to 20th May. Play and re-enter with same or different partners at any time - any combination of ladies, men or mixed.

Results of John Browne Scratch Cups - Week Ending 6th May

 

The John Browne Scratch Cups, kindly sponsored by Mary and Mattie Moloney of Tomasins Bar & Restaurant, attracted very competitive fields in all categories. There was a large entry of visiting non-members and we hope that the course and competition was enjoyed by all.

 

The Ladies Cup was won in fine style by our own Marian Kennedy, while Jim Sullivan had four shots to spare in winning the Intermediate Cup. Mark Greer (Tralee) emerged victorious in the Junior Cup and thus ended Mike Tangney's three year hold on this trophy.

Draw Made for Mens Club Singles and Fourball

Club Singles
 
The draw for the Club Singles Championship has thrown up some very interesting preliminary round matches. Defending champion Michael O'Connor has a tough draw against 2005 Golfer of the Year, Ken Ryan. Our Spring League Champion and Vice Captain Michael Williams will have to overcome Jim O'Connor to reach the last 32. Last year's beaten finalist, Denis McCarthy is in training locally for his clash with the consistent and sometime Golfer of the Year, Pat Prendeville. Pat continues his preparations in Portugal. However the tie of the round is surely the meeting of Munster Country Club teammates Joe Mulcahy and John Rowan. John has taken himself to the U.S. for a few weeks to get his game in order and to get a new set of irons we believe, while Joe showed no mercy in disposing of opponents in our recent great wins in the Munster Country Clubs.
 
Club Fourball
 
Interesting ties in the first round of the Fourball include the meeting of the senior pairing of Kevin Moore and Monty Falvey and the not-quite-yet-seniors Alan Bulman and President Joe McKenna. Also worth keeping an eye on is the meeting of Seamus Browne & Denis McCarthy and Ken Ryan & John Rowan. Tie of the round has to be the clash of the international big hitters Donagh Shanahan & Con O'Connor and the possibly-even-bigger-hitters Joe Rogers & Colm Sheehy.....what's the betting on all four finishing with the same ball they started with?
