Castlegregory Reach 3rd Round of Jimmy Bruen

Our Men's team reached the 3rd round of the Jimmy Bruen Shield for the first time in the Club's history during a scorching weekend of intense golfing battle in Castleisland. In the first round on Saturday morning we had a thrilling victory over Abbeyfeale. After a quick sandwich an a cup of tea our men had to face the first tee again to do battle with Glengarrif from across the Cork border. As in the earlier match this turned into a mighty battle in the hot afternoon sun before victory was secured by the odd match in five.

Manager Mike Keane ordered his troops to an early bed as Newcastle West, one of the favourites, had to be faced at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning. Sunday was another scorcher and after a hearty breakfast at the very friendly Castleisland club house, our team faced the starter for the third time over the weekend. Another titanic struggle ensued against our West Limerick friends with all five matches close and highly competitive. In the end Newcastle West deserved their victory, but only just. This was an excellent performance by our team and great credit must go to the highly organised and very efficient manager Mike Keane, and to all panel members for their time, dedication and effort.

A message from the Club Captain:
On behalf of all club members I would like to thank Manager Mike and all panel members for their tremendous effort in the Jimmy Bruen over the weekend. Your demeanour, competitive spirit and sportsmanship did Castlegregory proud. You are a credit to the club and you have demonstrated that the Club can compete and win in all competitions that we enter. It's onwards now to the Irish Mixed Foursomes, in partnership with the Ladies Club, in Mallow next weekend versus Killarney in round 1. This will be followed by the quarter final of the Munster Country Clubs against Spanish Point in Ballyheigue on June 23rd, and the first round of the Billy O'Sullivan Shield versus Waterville in Castlegregory on July 7th. Best wishes to all teams in the coming weeks.......George.
